My Bride brought home Costco's 2025 chrysanthemum offering. It included a flower I had never before seen, the Globe Amaranth or Bachelor's Button (Gomphrena globosa). This image represents the first emanating from my inaugural "Lumichory" session.
When I first shot this scene, I did not think much would come of it. When I reviewed the image, the first thing I noticed was how well my new technique worked. Then I studied the image more I noticed something else. The purple lattice of false flowers, the tiny yellow florets emerging from within — that quiet, intricate system pulled me in. I am fascinated when I see the intricate complexity packed in something as simple as a flower. It is that unnecessary precision in design that brings me back to Romans 1:20,"For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, both His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse." This has been the theme of my nature, especially floral, photography. What looks simple at a glance reveals a depth of design when you slow down and really look. For me, that’s the majesty of God in creation: complexity woven into the smallest places, waiting to be seen.
The title is born from this philosophy as well. Anyone who has read the book, seen the movie or the stage production of, "The Color Purple," will remember the line from Sug Avery, “I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it. People think pleasing God is all God cares about. But any fool living in the world can see it always trying to please us back.”
